    In 2006 Head Office of Land Surveying and Cartography initiated works of calculation of territorial units' area with the use of new method, based on the data from the computer database of the State Register of Borders and Area of Units of Administrative Division. Some of the units are influenced at the same time by the new calculation methods and the territorial changes. Thus it is impossible to get their current area using their area of previous year and the information on the changes of their borders.
    Changes of area:
    - The period since 2nd January 2005 till 1st January 2006 - differences between areas of 96% of gminas that affecting areas of voivodships and powiats. The territory of Poland also decreased by 187 ha;
    - The period since 2nd January 2006 till 1st January 2007 differences between areas of 10% of gminas that affected about 16% of powiats areas and influenced the territory of four voivodships. The territory of Poland also decreased by 377 ha;
    - The period since 2nd January 2007 till 1st January 2008 - differences between areas of about 10% of gminas that affected about 20% of powiats areas and influenced the territory of eight voivodships;
    - The period since 2nd January 2008 till 1st January 2009 - differences between areas of about 7% of gminas that affected about 18% of powiats areas and influenced the territory of eight voivodships;
    - The period since 2nd January 2009 till 1st January 2010 - differences between areas of about 8% of gminas that affected about 18% of powiats, cities with powiat status and eleven voivodships. The territory of Poland also increased by 29 ha.
    The period since 2nd January 2010 till 1st January 2011 - differences between areas of about 3% of gminas that affected about 6% of powiats and cities with powiat status as well as two voivodships. The period since 2nd January 2011 till 1st January 2012 - differences between areas of about 3% of gminas that affected about 7% of powiats and cities with powiat status. According to Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography information, the area given in km2 is the result of calculation by separated application, the main aim of which is the summing up the area of the lower lever units to the units of higher level. Data in square kilometres are not the results of rounding the area from hectares, thus there are the cases of their incorrectness.
