Pre-primary education comprises: nursery schools (including special nursery schools), pre-primary sections in primary schools and other forms of pre-school education (pre-primary education units, pre-primary centres). Data have been compiled on the basis of S-01 report and since 2007, based on the Educational Information System administered by the Ministry of National Education. Data on pre-primary education concern children in establishments (including children staying all school year in establishments conducting health care activity) in a given reporting year as of 30 September. Until the 2003/2004 school year, 6-year-old children were entitled to one year pre-school preparation. On 1 September 2004, an obligation to complete one year pre-school preparation in a nursery schools or a pre-primary sections in a primary school was introduced for children aged 6. From 1 September 2011, this obligation covered children aged 5. In the school years 2009/2010 – 2013/2014, 6-year-old children could start education in the first grade of primary school on request of the parents. In the 2014/2015 school year, compulsory education was imposed on 6-year-old children born in the first half of 2008, and in the 2015/2016 school year, it covered all 6-year-old children. From 1 September 2016, compulsory education for 6-year-olds and pre-school obligation for 5-year-olds were waived. Data on places in nursery schools and other forms of pre-school education since 2019 have not been presented due to the inconsistency of information obtained from the Educational Information System.
