Areas under legal protection P1659 1996-2023Gmina17
The total of areas under legal protection for Poland since 1995, in order to eliminate double counting of the same area, does not include nature reserves, documentation sites, ecological areas and landscape-nature complexes located within the boundaries of landscape parks and protected landscape areas. Data on the areas of special nature value under legal protection does not take into account information on Natura 2000 areas. Data on forms of nature protection are as of 31 December. Since 2009, in connection with the entry into force of the Act of 23 January 2009 amending certain acts in connection with changes in the organisation and division of public administration tasks in a voivodship (Journal of Laws 2009, No. 92, item 753), introducing, inter alia, amendments to the Act on Nature Conservation, the competencies of some entities with regard to the establishment of certain forms of nature protection have changed. Landscape parks and protected landscape areas were transferred to the competence of voivodship regional councils, and since 2009 all these areas have been reported in the OS-7 report by them. Documentation sites, ecological areas, landscape-nature complexes and monuments of nature were transferred to the competence of gmina offices, and since 2009 they have reported on the aforementioned forms of protection in the SG-01 report. Since 1999 one report has been drawn up for urban-rural gminas, with no information for urban and rural parts separately.
Areas under legal protection - indicators P3312 1996-2023Gmina5
The percentage share of the area under legal protection may in some cases exceed 100%. This situation is due to the fact that the verification of the area of areas under legal protection in relation to the area of gminas is often not possible. In many cases, this is due to the fact that the entities that report data on these areas do not have the possibility to adjust them to administrative changes. In such cases the indicator should be treated as a 100% share of protected area in a gmina. Indicators used for the calculations of the geodesic area include the change of the of area the country introduced in 2023. The change involves including the Bay of Puck and a part of the Bay of Gdańsk to the area of internal sea waters. Detailed information is to be found in the group: Geodetic area of the country.

Important protected animals P1981 2003-2023Region (NUTS 2)6
The presented data on the numbers of protected animals are estimates. The data come from the regional directorates of environmental protection, which obtain them, among others, from the organizational units of the State Forests or national parks and on the basis of natural inventories from previous years and literature data. The data are not supported by fieldwork performed according to a single methodology, but are collected cyclically once a year from the same sources. The exception is the bison, which numbers are given according to data from the "European Bison Pedigree Book".
